In India costumes rental was earlier limited to ramleela and nautanki’s. Costumes rental industry has flourished tremendously during past few years. The main customers are from education sector. If we talk about this industry in past I clearly remember that teachers asked me to wear my best clothes for stage performance in late 70’s and early 80’s. During mid 80’s teachers started giving costumes requirements to the parents it was the parent’s responsibility to get the dress of required design.
My mother stitched a beautiful little red riding hood’s gown and cap for me. For another performance she stitched a beautiful Punjabi salwar kurta in satin using lots of gota and kiran. It was not only me but all the parents who have opted to stitch costumes themselves or taken help of tailor. This scenario started changing from early 1990 when big school started taking professional help of tailors. After measurements same dresses were stitched for a performance and afterwards dresses were given to the students. The cost of the was obviously taken from the parents which was quite a additional charge on parents, one dress for one function. So dress rental came as a solution for this problem.
In present scenario almost all schools wanted to showcase themselves best so they are paying a lot of emphasis on co-curricular activities other than academics.
With increases in number of schools the requirement for fancy dresses has also increased. On an average a school conducts Five main events in which costumes are required

Independence Day
Annual Function
Sports day
Fancy dress competition
Some schools also conducts grand parents day, Any colour day, Fruit and vegetable day, Dandia, Janmashtmi, Christmas etc.

The major problem arises while selection of costumes supplier , right costumes and accessories, fittings, size, and timely delivery.
